Battery Characterization: Techniques & Applications

Written by Abdul Bari | Updated:

Introduction

This would involve systematically analyzing the battery’s physical, chemical, and electrical characteristics. Capacity, voltage, impedance, energy density, thermal behavior, and cycle life characterize tests under this method. These parameters give information concerning the battery’s performance under various conditions that provide guidelines for development to fit intended applications. Lithium-ion batteries are required in consumer electronics, energy storage, and electric vehicles because they are lighter and have a better energy density than lead-acid or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have a 50% higher capacity in watt-hours per kilogram (w-h/kg) than NiMH batteries. To electrically separate the anode from the cathode, each battery cell—often made of a polymer membrane—has a separator. Battery safety depends on the separator’s integrity.

Battery Material Analysis

Every lithium-ion battery comprises a mixture of complex materials, with the battery’s powder being its core. Powder analysis identifies the most critical compaction density and resistivity parameters to understand the inner workings governing battery performance.

  • Powder Compaction Density: Density is a physical property determined by particle size and distribution. It is essential information that makes studying the battery powder’s packing performance possible. They may spot the importance of the compaction density performers, and with that, even slight variations from the identical batches to the other ones will be detectable to get close control over the battery performance.
  • Powder Resistivity: Ionic and electronic resistance form powder resistivity, one of the complex features. The ionic conductivity, in turn, refers to the abundant flow of lithium ions within the electrolyte and pores of electrodes. At the same time, electronic resistivity defines the capacity of active materials and current collectors for conductivity. A reliable evaluation of powder resistivity is necessary for the battery’s performance and efficient energy current flow.

Performance Testing

Battery performance eventually has to be verified through physical testing. Additional valuable tools are available to help comprehend battery performance and shorten testing time. A hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HIL) is a potentially helpful tool for evaluating the BMS design and demonstrating the controller’s real-time response to realistic virtual stimuli. Another helpful tool is computer models forecasting battery behavior from temperature response to aging and system losses. These models help better understand how the battery will change mechanically and electrochemically over time. A battery’s performance monitoring, data gathering, drive cycle testing, abuse and vibration testing, thermal testing, and aging test validation should all be part of the tests scheduled at the cell and pack levels.

Common Battery Failures

Lithium-ion batteries may fail when shorts occur between the anode and the cathode. Several manufacturing defects inside the cells may increase the likelihood of such failure. These include:

  • Burrs on the electrode foils
  • Voids in the electrode materials
  • Chemical contamination
  • Inconsistent particle morphology of electrodes

The Need for Characterization and Failure Analysis

Characterization is becoming increasingly crucial to detect manufacturing and design flaws, as battery producers and end users want excellent performance and safety. Both destructive and in-situ testing must assess batteries and identify the best ways to increase performance and safety while utilizing materials and procedures that will not raise battery costs.

The budget for certification and testing, the level of precision required, and the information necessary all influence the choice of characterization technique. Although nondestructive testing eliminates the need to disassemble the battery, it only yields limited information.

Conclusion

In the case of battery technology, where progress is achieved through innovation that makes energy a viable alternative, one must understand all the facts of material analysis to succeed. From explaining the subtleties of battery powder to the electrode resistance happening at a cell level, each aspect of material testing contributes to understanding the potential of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have many drawbacks that could prevent their widespread use, notwithstanding their benefits. Operating life and overall lifespan continue to be the primary concerns.  Once designed and prepared, the compounds under study need to be characterized with conventional means (diffraction, microscopy, spectroscopies, etc.), bearing in mind that microstructure (crystallite/particle size, specific surface, defects, etc.) can have a significant influence on the electrochemical behavior.
